Toronto's Traffic Site

Democratizing Toronto's traffic data.

Toronto is buried in open traffic data and does almost nothing useful with it. Toraffic.ca turns that raw feed into a clear, honest view of which streets construction, events, and emergency work are actually chewing up. Built for commuters, planners, and anything that wants to plug straight into the numbers.

The Mission

Much of the data on how Toronto moves, from restrictions and closures to counts and signal metadata, is published openly but scattered across feeds and formats. Our mission is to bridge that gap: aggregate it, keep it current, and present it clearly so a more informed public can make better decisions.

Transparency

Every dataset links back to its City of Toronto Open Data page and license. Nothing is invented.

Honest estimates

The impact score and routing penalties are clearly labelled estimates: approximations, not measured travel time.

Our Approach

We use the City of Toronto Open Data Portal as our source of truth, synced on each feed's cadence into a spatial database. Our self-hosted routing engine (OSRM) plans trips two ways, with and without current disruption penalties, and the difference is attributed per source.

“Data alone is just noise. Context is what makes it information.”

The Data

Seven City of Toronto datasets, kept current:

  • Road restrictions (construction, events, closures)
  • CaféTO curb-lane & parklet café locations
  • The cycling network
  • Permanent bicycle counters (sites + daily counts)
  • Intersection turning-movement counts (1984 to present)
  • Midblock vehicle counts (1989 to present)
  • Traffic signals (accessibility features, transit signal priority, and pedestrian head-start intervals)
  • City ward boundaries

See Data sources for URLs and cadences, or the impact and timeline views. It is not an official City of Toronto service, and the road-restriction feed reflects approved bookings rather than real-time incidents.
