Privacy Policy

Toronto Traffic is an independent project that visualizes City of Toronto open data. This policy explains what we collect when you use the site, why, and the choices you have. We collect as little as possible and we do not sell your data or use third-party advertising trackers.

Analytics (Matomo)

We use Matomo, a privacy-focused analytics tool that we self-host at analytics.ideawarehouse.ca. Because it is self-hosted, your analytics data stays on our own infrastructure and is not shared with a third-party analytics company.

Matomo records aggregate usage information, including:

• Pages you visit and the order you visit them in
• The site or link that referred you
• Your browser type, operating system, device type, and screen size
• An approximate, city-level location derived from an anonymized IP address
• Interactions such as scroll depth, clicks on content, and custom events (for example, opening a dataset or planning a route)

Your IP address is anonymized before it is stored, and we do not use it to identify you. We do not combine this data with any other information to build a personal profile.

Cookies

Matomo sets a small number of first-party cookies to distinguish returning visits from new ones and to measure how long visits last. These cookies are scoped to this site only. They cannot be read by other websites and are not used for advertising. You can clear or block cookies in your browser at any time without losing access to the site.

Information you submit

Most of the site is read-only. If you submit a CaféTO report or similar feedback, we store the information you enter so we can review it. Please do not include personal information you would not want retained. We use these submissions only to improve the accuracy of the data shown on the site.

What we do not do

• We do not require an account or collect names, emails, or passwords to browse.
• We do not sell, rent, or trade your data.
• We do not use third-party advertising or cross-site tracking networks.

Data retention

Aggregate analytics are retained only as long as they are useful for understanding site usage and are then purged or further aggregated. Open data displayed on the site is refreshed on a schedule and reflects the City of Toronto's published feeds.

Your choices

You can opt out of analytics by enabling the “Do Not Track” setting in your browser, which our Matomo installation is configured to respect, or by blocking analytics cookies. Doing so does not affect your access to any part of the site.
